Anatomy department is one of the basic medical departments situated in the new building near Professor’s Daoud Lecture Hall. The department is established as a separate department in 1951.The first head of department was Prof. H. A. Harris of the Cambridge University. His successors were
Human Anatomy is the science that study the structure of human beings and its relation to function. It includes the following subdivisions:
- Gross (macroscopic) anatomy: which studies the naked eye structure of the different body parts. The curriculum adopted in the department teaches gross anatomy in regions. These regions are the head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, perineum, upper and lower limbs, and the back. The regions are taught in the first phase of the medical school study i.e the second, third and fourth semesters. Gross anatomy is taught with integration between basic and clinical sciences.
- Developmental Anatomy (embryology): Which studies the development of the human being from the formation of the male and female germ cells, through fertilization and the beginning of conception, to birth. In addition to the birth defects that may arise. It is divided into general and systemic developmental anatomy, and is taught to second, third and fourth semester medical students.
- Histology: Histology is the study of the structure of the human body at microscopic and ultrastructure level with evidence of their function. It is also divided into general and systemic parts. General histology is taught in second semester while systemic histology is taught in third and fourth semesters.
- Neuroanatomy: Is one of the important divisions of anatomy which concentrate on the structure, function and clinical aspects of the nervous system. With introduction of the new medical school curriculum in 2008, neuroanatomy is taught as part of the neuroscience course. Neuroscience course is taught as in integrated course between ten departments in semester five.
- Living Anatomy: Radiologic anatomy or sectional anatomy studies the appearance of the different body parts in conventional and computerized tomography images as well as in magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound scans, and other related imaging techniques.
Students are important partner in the department and their inputs are highly considered.
The departmental activities
- Lectures: these are delivered by professors, associate and assistant professors, and lecturers.
- Tutorials: these are done in small groups under the supervision of all the staff.
- Practical sessions: through these the students complement their theoretical knowledge to better their understanding of the subject.
- Different theoretical and practical activities for the postgraduate students.
- Examinations: These include continuous assessment and final examinations.
- Student support:Academic, psychological and other forms of student support are provided continuously for students by the staff of the departments.

- Increase conduction of new and original research projects into local problems
- Issuing scientific papers and publications
- Establishing links and relations with regional and international counterpart departments
- Contributions to international conferences
- Expansion of the postgraduate studies
