The department of paediatrics was first established as part of Medicine department in 1966, then a separate department was established aided by WHO in 1968. The department established its own staff in 1972 and held its own exam in paediatrics for under graduates students.
The department is located in the old buildings in the western part of the faculty & it is going to move to its new location near Prof. Daoud lecture hall soon. Prof. Hafiz El Shazali was the first head of the department & his successors were:

Paediatrics is concerned with the health of infants, children and adolescence, their growth, development and their opportunity to achieve full potential as adults and it include the following subspecialties:

Teaching Load:
- · Teaching load for 4th , 5th & 6th year medical students.
- · Lectures: These delivered by all staff
- · Seminars: prepared by the 5th year student & discussed with staff members.
- · Skill lab: for 5th year students – supervised by staff members.
Clinical Rounds:

All clinical teaching is conducted by the staff members and by 9 members from the Ministry of Health & other universities.
Emergency department sessions:
- · Conducted in night duties and supervised by registrar on call.
- · For 5th year students in collaboration with community medicine department the student used to have a course on community paediatrics
- · Every student in 5th years will offer a log book for continuous assessment and a text book of paediatrics, manual for IMCI. By the end of the years the student has to satisfy 75% of the attendance to be eligible to sit for the final exam.
Examination
- · 5th year exam: consist of 20 questions (best of five) and the result will be considered as 5% of 6th year final exam.
- · 6th year final exam: consist of:
- · Written exam score 50% of the marks & it contain the following:
- · 50 (best of five)
- · 4 problems
- · 2 short essays
- · OSCE exam
Clinical exam:
- · Score 50% of the marks & it consists of
- · One long case
- · Two short cases
Student evaluated by inviting external examiner and examiners from other universities.
Contribution of department in other activities:
Some members of the department are contributing in Primary Health Care Program (PHC) in Ministry of Health, also contributes in activities in WHO, UNICEF, EPI, Nutrition, Growth & development & in other National programmes.
Post graduates:
The department established MPCH (Master of Paediatrics & Childhealth in 1976) which is promoted to Clinical MD in 1990. The department is responsible for the MRCPCH exam (Part I & Part II (written) and the exam is conducted in the Faculty of Medicine.
Links: There were previous links with Newcastle universities (UK), Abssala University (Sweden) and Padova University (Italy). Most of them stopped now.
