Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology is situated in the third floor of the northern building of the complex of the faculty of medicine.

It started as part of the general surgery since the establishment of the medical college. Orthopaedics and trauma services at that time were covered by general surgeons.

The department of orthopaedics and Traumatology started 1970 by the appointment of late Mr. Adam Fadlallah as the first Sudanese lecturer in orthopaedics to be appointed in the department of surgery and till this time the department was part of the general surgery. 1982 it became a separate department.

The department teaches under and postgraduate Students, with emphasises on:

• · Trauma surgery
• · Orthopaedics surgery, including paediatric orthopaedics.
• · Amputation an rehabilitation surgery.
• · Prosthetic and orthotic rehabilitation.
• · The department is also looking after the MD degree in orthopaedics and trauma.
• · Series of lectures in Orthopaedics and Trauma are delivered in the fifth year and sixth year.
• · Regular hospital teaching rounds for fifth and sixth year students are also delivered. Clinical methods are incorporated with integrated clinical and basic sciences to clarify the Patho-anatomy and Patho-physiology of common orthopaedic and trauma problems.
• · Final examination is carried out as part of the general surgery, one orthopaedic and one trauma problem in the SSAQs as well as single best answer type of MCQs.

Clinical Activities and social impact of the department:

• · The department covers about 75% of the trauma services in
• · Khartoum Teaching Hospital (KTH).
• · The department runs dedicated paediatric orthopaedic unit in
• · Soba University Hospital (SUH).
• · The department runs a specialized osteoarthritis clinic in SUH, and
• · The department covers a dedicated haemophilia clinic in KTH.
• · The department covers Khartoum Cheshire Home(KCH) activities for disabled children.
• · The department looks after a joint project Sudan Clubfoot Project, at SUH and KCH. The clubfoot unit is an internationally recognized unit for Ponseti method for management of clubfoot.

The department is active member in the ministry of health advisory committee.

Ongoing research work:

• · Ponseti Method of Treatment of Clubfoot as part of Sudan Clubfoot Project. The project is a multi-centre project, joint activity between the Department of Orthopaedics University of Khartoum, Khartoum Cheshire Home and is funded by CBM –a German Organization.
• · Anterior Tibial Artery deficiency in Congenital Talipes Equino Varus patients.
• · Inter-observer difference reliability in Pirani Clubfoot scoring.
